1.3 Supporting Topics
In addition to the NIG concept, this document also discusses other topics
that support its strategy. These are as summarised below:
-
The business environment (both local and global) and other supporting
infrastructure shows that the time to initiate the implementation of an
information grid is approaching fast.
-
The need to develop the NIG as a properly planned central component
of Malaysia’s information infrastructure exist with underlying reasons
such as accelerated development, planning and coordination, NITC and leadership
issues, information accessibility, support for the service industry, increasing
productivity and global factors that will affect Malaysia’s competitiveness.
-
Numerous potential benefits can be derived from having the NIG in
place, especially for the national information infrastructure, Malaysia’s
socio-economy, government, general public and information providers.
-
The implementation of the NIG will take into account the current
situation and limited resources of the country. A step-by-step implementation
outline is provided that defines the major implementation phases in two
scopes: applications and geographical roll-out.
“The time has come for us to design
an integrated information network
encompassing all aspects.”
Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad
