6.4 Future Implementation - Multimedia Phase

After the initial and secondary implementation phases, the NIG and its supporting infrastructure would be ready for the addition of multimedia and broadband services.  It is assumed that by this time, the developed countries will also have widespread multimedia and broadband information traffic on their respective information grids.

As for the applications, multimedia and broadband transfer speeds (above 600 megabits per second), matched with the ever-increasing power and capacities of computers, will present numerous possibilities.  No attempt is being made to list of all the possibilities, but some probable ones are:

  • Multimedia tele-shopping
  • Multimedia tele-learning (e.g. professional and private institution programmes, trial examinations, old examination papers, virtual chemistry experiments, etc.)
  • Legal / court case / litigation checks
  • Hypertext / graphical / multimedia reference material libraries
  • Real-time foreign stock exchange information
  • Multimedia business services directory
  • Financial exchange bulletins
  • News- and Video-on-demand
  • Games- and entertainment-on-demand
  • Private bulletin boards / special interest group on-line forums and conferencing
  • Integrated government information.
  • Nationwide land and geographical information
  • Transportation information services
  • Multimedia mail
  • Public video-conferencing
