5.2 Socio-Economic

Telecommerce and Telebanking.  The NIG will facilitate these types of services, such as the proposed Third-party GIRO.  A transaction messaging switchboard in essence, this service can also support telecommerce among consumers and vendors.

Work Quality Enhancement.  Availability of information-on-demand will add more quality and intelligence to work and business processes, producing decisions and results that are based on a wide range of supporting facts and figures.

Creating New Business. New and existing companies may gain more revenue from (a) entering the information-selling business or (b) expanding the range and reach of their trade through telecommerce.

Higher Productivity.  By providing the supporting infrastructure to help others produce more without high increases in capital and labour usage, the NIG will also help increase productivity levels in other industrial sectors (see The Need for NIG chapter).

Information-Use Habit-Forming.  With the NIG in place, it could be a catalyst for developing the habit of using information in Malaysians’ daily activities.

IT Skill Development.  Being a large public service provider, the NIG will ultimately provide more jobs in the local IT industry, either directly or indirectly.

Informed Society.  The culmination of all the above benefits is the creation of an “information-rich society” living in “intelligent cities” and working in “information-based organisations”resulting in increased socio-economic quality and efficiency to make Malaysia and her people a leading nation on the world stage.
